This is the Story of Ryan Murphy

Profile Story-Ryan Murphy

From Chesapeake, Virginia, Ryan Murphy isn’t your everyday online chatting, sports playing, party going 19-year-old college guy.

Although he’s never been, “My ideal place to live would be Iceland because the weather is nice,” Murphy explains. Murphy also likes to drive his 2000 Honda Civic because it’s a stick shift and “stick-shifts are more exciting to drive, plus I like to challenge myself,” says Murphy. This is definitely a guy who doesn’t like to take the easy way out.

Murphy is currently a sophomore at Virginia Commonwealth University. He enjoys music, reading and occasionally playing hack-e- sack. Murphy also enjoys reading comic books such as Transmetropolitan which is a Vertigo Comic written by Warren Ellis. The series was originally part of the short-lived DC Comics imprint Helix. He also enjoys reading science fiction books. His favorite book to read is the 1961 best-selling Hugo Award- winning, Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein. The comic tells a story about a human raised by Martians on the planet Mars, after his return to Earth in early adulthood.

Murphy has a passion for progressive music and playing the guitar.
“I usually just mess around on it and learn songs. I’ll sometimes learn how to play some of my favorite songs too,” says Murphy. He also enjoys writing and “Solving problems on a social content” because he likes the challenge of figuring things out, explains Murphy. But during his free time, he likes to spend time in the student media center at VCU being creative working on articles.

Murphy was inspired to play during his senior year in high school while listening to his favorite band called Mars Volta. And just like any other teenager, he enjoys surfing the Internet. But not just the usual social networking sites such as Facebook, but he likes to search about things in his other interests such as music, news and for writing.

“He probably likes to scare children as well, I don’t have a follow up story for that, that’s just my attempt to slander his good name,” jokes his close friend, Charles Couch. They’ve known each other for about nine months. They met last semester at VCU while taking the same Mass Communications class; they created the MESH Media Network together last year at VCU’s media center. They cover local campus events, music, food and the over all campus life.

While interviewing close friend, Charles Couch, he gives some additional 4-1-1 on Murphy. Couch explains Murphy’s best trait is that he is very relaxed and “seems to take everything in stride, never really gets bend out of shape.” While Murphy says, “I’m friggin’ awesome, self-absorbed…haha just kidding”, he jokes. It’s easy to observe that Murphy likes to have fun and not take things too seriously. Couch reveals that Murphy’s worst trait is that he pronounces abbreviations commonly used on the Internet such as “L-O-L”.

“Well he’s generally a good guy. He’s always quick to help if you need it and he’s fun to work with,” admits Couch.

While talking to Murphy, he was very energetic and it was easy to tell that he enjoyed to joke around and have fun. But at the same time he will be serious when he has to. Being the first member of his family to attend a four-year college, eventually Murphy wants to graduate with a degree in Print Journalism and write features for a magazine or do long-form investigative journalism for a company such as Time Magazine. If Ryan Murphy had to be described in three words by anyone, outgoing, relaxed and “friggin’ awesome” would definitely sum it up.
